Had a trip into Chesterfield station this morning to see a steam charter supposedly drawn by "West Country" class 'Braunton', one of my favourite type locomotives. If that loco was for some reason unavailable, the substitute was to be 'Britannia' apparently, but in the event, what actually arrived was.....

    and finally......

    IMG_2191.jpeg

It was a charter trip terminating in Chesterfield, passengers heading by coach to Chatsworth House for the Xmas Fair, loco heading to nearby Barrow Hill shed for watering etc until the return trip around 6pm. In all honesty, Ex-LMS loco's are not my specialist subject, but it is I believe a 'Jubilee' Class loco, though I must have seen most of the entire class in my younger days loco spotting from nearby Tapton Junction. Never held my attention in quite the same way as Southern 'Merchant Navy/Battle of Britain/West Country' loco's did!

    Hi Keith,
It's a Black 5 rather than a Jubilee. We have another "Lancashire Fusilier" running past the house a few times a day Thursday to Sunday on the Polar Express at the minute.

This is the best photo that I have managed so far - not that great.

I’m sure it is OK to call a Black 5 a Black 5.

Five locos were given names in the 30's and 40's

    5154 45154 Lanarkshire Yeomanry 1937
    5155 45155 The Queen's Edinburgh 1942 1944
    5156 45156 Ayrshire Yeomanry 1936
    5157 45157 The Glasgow Highlander 1936
    5158 45158 Glasgow Yeomanry 1936

    Hi Keith,

It seems it's a preservation "Fad" for most of them, there were only five ever named by the LMS and one of those the name only lasted a couple of years.

5154 Lanarkshire Yeomanry 1937 1966 (withdrawal from service)
    5155 The Queen’s Edinburgh 1942 1944 (remained in service until 1964)
5156 Ayrshire Yeomanry 1936 1968 (withdrawal from service)
5157 The Glasgow Highlander 1936 1962 (withdrawal from service)
5158 Glasgow Yeomanry 1936 1964 (withdrawal from service)

I remember David Shepherd saying he was under his 9F Black Prince doing a bit of lubricating when two pairs of Hush Puppies with corduroy trousers appeared next to him. One pair said to the other that he thought it was disgusting naming the 9F. David squirted some oil over the shoes and shouted it’s my @&£#%#£ loco I can call it what I like.
